Ceramics has been around for what seems like forever. There has been evidence of it dating back to 24,000 BC, so what makes it stick around in this day and age?
Ceramics is able to connect communities to one another. As does art in general. Art can fun and whimsical, or it can be serious and like hardware. Artists and ceramicists have the opportunity to bring characters from fiction (or the past) to life, and make them that much more real. How exciting that we get to bring Star Wars, Princesses, Monsters, and more to life! We get to bring historical and biblical characters to life! We get to excite the kid in everyone!Â
I also believe that ceramics has the power to connect generations together. Whether it's through tableware, characters, mementos, ect. there is something about having handmade objects passed down that connects you to your ancestors. Personally, my family uses my great-grandmother's fine china when we have special meals together like Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. These pieces of china remind us of where we have come from, and how far we have yet to travel. It is truly something magical, and being able to start that tradition in my own family and have lots of mementos around to remind family members of my presence is something that is very special to me. I hope that my tableware gets lots of use by my family and me, and only stops being used once it meets the fate of the floor of death.
